The Now in Then: Contemporary Practices Informed by Jewish Rituals and Narratives / by Miriam Schaer

I’m very pleased to have work included in The Now in Then: Contemporary Practices Informed by Jewish Rituals and Narratives, which will be on view at Cal State East Bay Gallery, from January 29–February 21, 2019. Gallery hours : Monday - Thursday, 11am-4pm)

There is an opening reception of the University Art Gallery's upcoming exhibitions next Tuesday January 29th, 5:30-7:30pm. Sadly I won’t be there, but I know the show will be beautiful.

This exhibition brings together the work of six contemporary artists whose work has been influenced by the rituals and narratives of Judaism. Adaptive and responsive to the times, these artists employ studio strategies and material explorations that build on Jewish heritage. Through reinterpretations of the mourners kaddish and lunar calendar to a playful reconstruction of a mahjong set, these artists continue to examine notions of Jewish spirituality and customs, as well as explorations into cross-cultural exchange.
